Core Aeration and Overseeding in Peoria, IL
Peoria clay packs down hard. Core aeration pulls plugs of soil so water, air and roots can get back in, and overseeding right after fills thin spots with new grass. Done together in early fall, it’s the best thing you can do for a tired lawn.
The fall lawn fix
- Core aeration (plugs pulled, not spikes)
- Overseeding with cool-season seed
- Best timing: late August to September
- Watering plan for new seed
- Sprinkler heads and lines flagged first
Short answer
When should you aerate a lawn in Peoria?
Early fall, from late August through September, is the best time for the tall fescue and Kentucky bluegrass lawns common in Peoria. The soil is still warm for seed to sprout, nights are cooler, and new grass has two months to root before winter. Spring aeration works too, but crabgrass competes with new seed.
How do I know my lawn needs aeration? Water puddles or runs off instead of soaking in, the soil is hard to push a screwdriver into, grass is thin in high-traffic areas, or the lawn is mostly clay. Most Peoria lawns benefit from aeration once a year or every other year.

How it works
What happens on aeration day
- Mark hazards. We flag sprinkler heads, shallow lines and invisible dog fence wires so the aerator misses them.
- Core aerate. A machine pulls finger-sized plugs of soil every few inches. The plugs stay on the lawn and break down in a week or two.
- Overseed. Seed goes down right after, so it falls into the holes and makes good soil contact.
- Watering instructions. New seed needs to stay moist until it sprouts. You get a simple schedule.

After
Caring for the lawn after overseeding
- Water lightly once or twice a day so the top of the soil stays damp until seed sprouts, usually one to three weeks.
- Then switch to deeper, less frequent watering.
- Hold off mowing until new grass is about 3 to 4 inches tall.
- Skip weed killers on new seed until it has been mowed a few times.
- Keep foot traffic and pets off thin areas for a few weeks.

FAQ
Aeration questions
Core aeration or spike aeration?
Core aeration. Spikes just poke holes and can pack clay tighter around them. Pulling plugs actually relieves compaction.
Should I rake up the plugs?
No. Leave them. They break down on their own and return soil to the surface.
Can you aerate when the ground is dry?
Very dry clay is too hard for the tines to go deep. We aim for soil that’s moist but not soggy, sometimes after a rain or a good watering.
How often should I aerate?
Once a year for heavy clay or high-traffic lawns; every other year for healthier lawns.
