Retaining Walls in Peoria, IL

Short answer

Why do retaining walls fail?

Water. Clay soil behind a wall soaks up rain and pushes hard, especially when it freezes. Walls fail when they’re built without clean drainage stone and a drain pipe behind them, on a thin footing, or taller than the design can handle. That’s when you see leaning, bulging or blocks popping out.

How tall can a retaining wall be? Short garden walls are straightforward. Taller walls need reinforcement grid and, beyond a certain height or near a driveway or house, an engineered design and possibly a permit. Ask the city before planning a tall wall; we check it when we price the job.

How we build

How a retaining wall gets built

  1. Locate and plan. Utilities marked through JULIE (811), wall height and drainage outlet planned.
  2. Trench and footing. Dig a trench, compact a gravel footing, and set the first course level and partly buried.
  3. Drainage. A perforated drain pipe at the base and clean crushed stone behind the wall so water drains instead of pushing.
  4. Stack and reinforce. Courses set back slightly; reinforcement grid layered into the backfill on taller walls.
  5. Cap and finish. Caps glued down, soil and plants placed above.

FAQ

Retaining wall questions

Can you fix a leaning retaining wall?

Sometimes it can be rebuilt using the same blocks with proper drainage and footing. A badly failed wall usually needs to come down and be rebuilt.

Block or natural stone?

Segmental block is engineered for strength and easy to build tall. Natural stone looks great for lower garden walls.

Do I need a permit?

It depends on height and location. Check with the City of Peoria for taller walls; we confirm before pricing.

How long do retaining walls last?

A well-built wall with good drainage can last decades. Poor drainage is the most common reason they don’t.
