What goes into a good patio

  • Excavation below the frost-heave zone
  • Compacted gravel base
  • Slope away from the house
  • Edge restraint so pavers don’t creep
  • Joint sand that locks pavers in

Short answer

Why do patios sink and heave in Peoria?

Almost always the base. Clay holds water, water freezes and expands, and a thin base lets pavers shift every winter. A patio that lasts here starts with digging out the clay and compacting several inches of crushed gravel in layers, then sloping it so water runs away from the house.

Pavers, concrete or natural stone? Pavers flex with freeze-thaw and can be lifted and reset if something settles. Poured concrete costs less up front but cracks and can’t be patched invisibly. Natural flagstone looks great and costs the most. All three need a proper base.

How we build

How a patio gets built

  1. Layout and locate. Mark the shape and have utilities marked through JULIE (811).
  2. Excavate. Dig out sod and clay to the depth the base needs. Patios get a deeper base than walkways.
  3. Base. Crushed gravel laid in layers and compacted with a plate compactor, sloped about 1/8 to 1/4 inch per foot away from the house.
  4. Bedding and pavers. A thin, level bedding layer, then pavers laid in pattern and cut to fit.
  5. Edge restraint. Keeps the outside rows from spreading.
  6. Joint sand. Swept in and compacted to lock the pavers together and slow weeds.

FAQ

Patio and walkway questions

How long does a paver patio take to build?

Most backyard patios take a few days to about a week, depending on size, access and weather.

Do I need a permit for a patio in Peoria?

It depends on the project. Check with the City of Peoria for larger hardscape or grading work. We confirm this before pricing.

Can you fix my sinking pavers?

Often, yes. We lift the pavers, rebuild the base where it failed, and reset them.

Will weeds grow between pavers?

Fewer, with properly compacted joint sand. Some sweeping and topping up every few years helps.
