Short answer
When is the best time to trim trees in Peoria?
Late winter, roughly February into March, is the best time for most trees: they’re dormant, you can see the branch structure, and cuts close quickly when spring growth starts. Oaks are the big exception in Illinois. Avoid pruning oaks from about April through July, when fresh cuts can attract the beetles that spread oak wilt.
When should shrubs be trimmed? Spring-flowering shrubs like lilac and forsythia right after they bloom. Summer-flowering shrubs and most hedges in late winter or early spring. Light shaping can happen through early summer.

How we trim
Pruning that keeps trees healthy
Proper cuts
Cuts just outside the branch collar, never flush with the trunk and never leaving stubs. That’s what lets the tree seal the wound.
No topping
Chopping the top off a tree causes weak, fast regrowth and decay. We thin and reduce selectively instead.
Not too much
Removing too much live canopy at once stresses a tree. We take what’s needed and plan the rest over time.

Know the limits
When to call someone else
- Power lines: Never trim near overhead electric lines yourself. Contact the electric utility; they handle line clearance.
- Trees by the street: Trees in the city right-of-way fall under the City of Peoria Forestry Division (309-494-8800). Call them before pruning or removing one.
- Large trees and removals: Big trees, climbing work and full removals near houses need a tree service with the right equipment and insurance. For tree health questions, a certified arborist is the right call.
- Ash trees: Emerald ash borer has killed many ash trees across Illinois. Dead ash gets brittle fast and should be handled by a tree service.
Storm cleanup
After a storm
Central Illinois storms drop a lot of limbs. We clear broken branches from yards and beds, make clean cuts on damaged limbs we can reach safely, and bundle brush to city rules (up to 5 feet and 50 pounds, tied with twine) or haul it away. See the Peoria yard waste guide and yard cleanup.
FAQ
Tree and shrub trimming questions
How much does tree trimming cost in Peoria?
It depends on the size and number of trees, how high the work is, access, and whether brush is hauled away. You get a written price after we look.
Can you trim my overgrown hedges?
Yes. Badly overgrown hedges may need to be cut back in stages over a season or two.
Do you remove whole trees?
[Answer per partner.]
Is it OK to trim an oak in summer?
It’s best to avoid it from about April through July in Illinois because of oak wilt risk. If a branch breaks in a storm, the damage should still be cleaned up.
Do you haul away the branches?
Yes, or we can bundle them for city pickup if you prefer.
