Short answer

How much mulch do my beds need?

About 2 to 3 inches total. If there’s already an inch or two of old mulch, you only need to top it up. More than 3 or 4 inches smothers roots, holds too much water in clay, and invites rot.

How do I figure how much mulch to buy? One cubic yard covers about 108 square feet at 3 inches deep, or about 160 square feet at 2 inches. Measure your beds and divide.

How we do it

Mulching the right way

No mulch volcanoes

Mulch piled against tree trunks traps moisture and invites rot and pests. We keep it a few inches back.

Real edges

A cut edge along beds keeps mulch in and grass out. It’s what makes the whole yard look sharp.

Weeds first

We pull weeds before mulching. Mulch over weeds just hides them for a couple of weeks.

Choosing mulch

Which mulch is best?

TypeGood forKeep in mind
Shredded hardwoodMost beds; knits together on slopesFades to gray over a season
Dyed mulchStrong color for front bedsColor fades; check what it’s made from
Rock or stoneSpots where you don’t want to re-mulchHeats up in sun; hard to remove later

On sloped beds, shredded hardwood stays put better than chunky bark, which washes out in heavy rain.
