Landscaping vs. Lawn Care: Which Do You Need?
Lawn care keeps grass healthy. Landscaping changes or maintains everything else: beds, plants, patios, walls and drainage. Here’s how to tell which you need, and when it makes sense to use one company for both.
Quick guide
- Grass problems: lawn care
- Beds and plants: landscaping
- Patios and walls: hardscaping
- Water problems: drainage
- All of it: a maintenance plan
Short answer
What’s the difference between lawn care and landscaping?
Lawn care is ongoing work on your grass: mowing, edging, feeding, weed control, aeration and seeding. Landscaping covers the rest of the yard: designing and planting beds, mulching, trimming shrubs, and building patios, walls and drainage. Lawn care is usually a recurring service; landscaping is often a project, followed by maintenance.

Which one
Match the problem to the service
- Brown patches, weeds, thin grass: lawn care, maybe grub control.
- Overgrown shrubs and messy beds: landscape maintenance.
- A bare or dated front yard: landscape design and planting.
- Want a patio or wall: hardscaping.
- Water sitting in the yard: drainage and grading.
- Leaves and storm debris: yard cleanup.

One company?
Should one company do both?
For many Peoria homeowners, yes. One crew that mows the lawn and keeps beds tidy means one schedule, one invoice and one person to call. It also means the people mowing notice problems early, like a dying shrub, a wet spot or grub damage, before they get expensive.
Big projects are the exception worth thinking about. For a large patio or drainage job, ask about experience with that specific work. See how to choose a landscaper.
